High praise indeed

Today is a great day. Why? My favourite author, Mark Tilbury, just posted the following about my psychological thriller THE TROUBLE WITH LIAM on Facebook: ‘If you like your fiction dark and gritty and don’t mind a story that tackles some difficult subjects, then I recommend you go get yourself a copy of The Trouble With Liam by Joy Mutter. I’m almost 20% into it and the damn thing won’t let me go plan my next book!’

I feel almost guilty for delaying his next book, which I can’t wait to read as they are always a winner. I only published my book on 1.10.2018 and I think there’s been more interest in it than any of my other twelve books. I’ve already written the first two chapters of the followup book, The Trouble With Wayne. I think I sense a series coming on.

Hostile test cover audiobook (hand)THE HOSTILE is book 1 of The Hostile 4-book series of paranormal crime thrillers. An audiobook, narrated by me, is available on Audible, Amazon, and iTunes. In a rundown area of Manchester, inside the bathroom of a terraced house overflowing with children and dysfunctional parents, a small but powerful entity befriends young Serena with disastrous results. This unlikely enigmatic force not only dramatically affects introverted Serena’s life but also threatens the well-being of everyone she knows, especially those who’ve earned the strange girl’s displeasure. It soon becomes clear that nobody should ever upset Serena if they know what’s good for them. After enjoying The Hostile, you’ll never look at D.I.Y. in the same way again.

It looks at the dramatic incidents, challenges, and temptations in the lives of four couples of varying ages, professions and sexual persuasions, all linked by blood or friendship. A Slice of the Seventies audiobook cover JPGA SLICE OF THE SEVENTIES tells the loosely autobiographical story of Jersey-born Mug, a troubled girl from a recently broken home. It covers her experiences as a teenager at the Isle of Wight Music Festival in 1970, the same year she follows a guru. The book tracks her tumultuous four years as an art student in Coventry, where vegetarian Mug finds herself living next door to an abattoir and a railway shunting yard with David, a fellow art student. Dramatic events follow on from the evening they first meet at a party, where David is attempting to commit an extremely public suicide. Whether you were around during that decade or not, you’re bound to enjoy this nostalgic Slice of the Seventies. Narrated by Tracey Norman, the audiobook is available on Audible, Amazon, and iTunes.

A great start to a snowy Sunday morning

A Slice of the Seventies audiobook cover JPGMy Sunday morning started brilliantly after I noticed I’d received this wonderful review of my recently released audiobook of A Slice of the Seventies. It was written by a listener in America. I’m sure the narrator of A Slice of the Seventies, Tracey Norman – Actress/Voice Artiste, will be as thrilled as I am to read his review.

Here is what the reviewer wrote on Audible.com:

Overall 5* Performance 5* Story 5*

How The Other Half Lived
“A Slice of the Seventies“ is right in my wheelhouse. Protagonist Mug was a British female and I’m an American male but her era was my era. Despite our different nationalities and gender, we seem to be kindred spirits in our formative years. Mug was the woman I was chasing albeit on the other side of the ocean and the angst she felt throughout “A Slice of the Seventies” was inflicted by guys like me. There was so much for me to identify with – and learn from — in this book that geography and gender didn’t seem to matter. It was a journey back in time written expertly by Joy Mutter and read just as expertly by Tracey Norman.

If you even vaguely remember the 1970’s from any global location, this is a must listen for you.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Book 10 is almost here

I uploaded the MOBI and pdf files of my new book, THE HOSTILE GAME onto my Facebook Hostile Series Launch Team page today.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/1694776034176904/

If anyone would like to join the other valued members of my Launch Team for The Hostile Game, the third paranormal thriller in The Hostile series, please just ask. I’d be thrilled to have you on board. My new book can be read as a standalone, but the MOBI and pdf files for the first two published books are also in the Files section on the Hostile series Launch Team page if you also want to read those. Book one in the series is called The Hostile, and the second book is Holiday for The Hostile.
I have been a member of five or six launch teams on Facebook and fully recognise their worth. I aim to publish The Hostile Game on Amazon in Kindle and paperback by the end of April after I’ve received feedback from my wonderful launch team members. It’ll be the 10th book I’ve written, designed and published in ten years.

Another freebie from me

The Kindle edition of my brand new thriller, HOLIDAY FOR THE HOSTILE, is FREE on Amazon today, 6th December.

Holiday for The Hostile, second book in The Hostile series, is a gripping contemporary paranormal thriller with a splash of horror. It was published on Amazon in Kindle and paperback editions on 1st December 2016. Serena, plus her unusual friend and partner in crime, Tile X, reluctantly find themselves suffering a family holiday at her eccentric grandfather’s hovel in Ireland. Who will manage to escape intact from their dramatic holiday from Hell?

Readers tell me they think Holiday for The Hostile is superior to book one, The Hostile, the paranormal thriller I published 8 months before its sequel. My mission, should I choose to accept it, is to ensure book three in The Hostile series is even more exciting than the first two. No pressure.

Here’s a snapshot of what a few of the readers who’ve read it say about Holiday for The Hostile:
“Ms Mutter has carved out a new niche for herself. And from where I’m standing, she’s way out in front … With some books, you get an idea where things are going and where they’re likely to end. Not this one. Every chapter was a surprise with new characters and situations and a bunch of wonderfully inventive deaths.”

“It has plenty of scary bits so if you don’t like scary bits then maybe it’s not the book for you but I personally can’t wait until book three is out.”

“The action moves to Ireland this time with lots of unforeseen consequences. With two guardian ghosts looking out for Serena, acting almost like Bill and Ben at times, there really are some light-hearted moments. The end is a total surprise. Was expecting a skeleton in the family closet, but it turns in a completely different direction, keeping you on your toes and guessing.”

“Excellent. The story got deeper & you get to know more about Serena and Tile X drops a deep hint! Really looking forward to more. Joy tells a good tale.”

A lovely present from another author

Hostile banner advert by Colin Garrow

There was a wonderful surprise waiting for me when I looked at my Twitter notifications today. The first thing I noticed was that celebrated author, Colin Garrow, has generously made this snazzy banner advert for my 2016 paranormal thriller, The Hostile. I’ll be smiling all day. Thank you, Colin.

I also noticed that The Hostile has received another 5-star review on Amazon, not from Colin I hasten to add. Thank you to whoever left the latest encouraging review. The Hostile is still lagging slightly behind Random Bullets as far as the number of ratings on Amazon goes, but Random Bullets was published five months before The Hostile. Reviews and ratings act as fuel for an author’s engine. Without reviews, whether they be 2-star or 5-star, we’d be working in a vacuum, without the positive criticism that enables writing skills to improve. I know that I’ve listened to the criticism from anyone kind enough to offer it. Whenever I agree with their analysis, I’ve changed elements of my style.

I’d been wondering which of my books to promote on social media today. It’s a daily dilemma with eight books to promote, but one I enjoy. I think I have my answer. Here is the link to The Hostile kindle edition on Amazon http://amzn.to/2c1OIIc. It is also available in paperback on there and also as an audiobook on Audible, Amazon and iTunes.

My Facebook author page is worth a mention. If you happen to be passing, take a look. If you’re feeling generous, please feel free to click the ‘like’ button.

Warms my heart

It was hard to stop smiling when I received this encouraging tweet from one of my followers on Twitter. I don’t know who Del Toro is apart from that he lives in the north of England. His job prevents him from making his tweets public, which is why I took a screenshot because I couldn’t re-tweet him. Now I have his words saved forever. It will remind me never to give up writing, however hard it is to be noticed amidst the millions of other authors of varying abilities populating this planet. If I can make one reader happy, then so am I. Thank you, Del Toro, whoever you are. Tweet from Del Torro

img_2096-2This is the book Del was recently so enthusiastic about. My 2015 paranormal crime thriller, Random Bullets, was published nine months ago. So far it has received thirteen 5-star reviews, nothing lower, since November 2015. Del Toro, the enthusiastic tweeter, couldn’t review or rate it because he doesn’t know how, so it should really be fourteen 5-star reviews across all Amazon sites. Never mind, I still have his tweet.
